What to put on an electrician invoice

  • The word Invoice and a unique invoice number (number them in order)
  • The invoice date and the date the work was finished
  • Your business name and address; a limited company puts its full registered name
  • The customer's name and address
  • What you did, with line prices and the total
  • If you're VAT registered: your VAT number and, for each line, the VAT rate, with the VAT total
  • Payment terms and how to pay: bank details with the invoice number as the reference, and a card payment link if you have one

Tips for electricians

  • Put the certificate number on the invoice, so the customer can match it to their paperwork and their insurer can too.
  • Solar panels and battery storage fitted in a home are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027; put them on their own lines at 0%. EV chargers are standard-rated at 20%.
  • Working for a main contractor on a building site? Your labour comes under CIS, so the contractor takes 20% off it (30% if you aren't registered).

Electrician Invoice Template: questions

Do electricians charge VAT on EV chargers and solar panels?

If you're VAT registered, an EV charger is standard-rated at 20%. Solar panels and battery storage fitted in a home are zero-rated until 31 March 2027, so put them on their own lines at 0% and the rest of the job at 20%.

What makes an invoice a VAT invoice?

Once you're VAT registered, your invoices must show your VAT number, the price of each line without VAT, the VAT rate and the VAT amount, and the total. If you're not registered you must not charge VAT or show a VAT number.

How long should payment terms be?

That's up to you: payment on completion, 7, 14 or 30 days are all common. Put the due date on the invoice. With business customers, if you agreed no terms, the Late Payment of Commercial Debts Act lets you claim interest at 8% over the Bank of England base rate once 30 days have passed.
