What to put on a roofer invoice

  • The word Invoice and a unique invoice number (number them in order)
  • The invoice date and the date the work was finished
  • Your business name and address; a limited company puts its full registered name
  • The customer's name and address
  • What you did, with line prices and the total
  • If you're VAT registered: your VAT number and, for each line, the VAT rate, with the VAT total
  • Payment terms and how to pay: bank details with the invoice number as the reference, and a card payment link if you have one

Tips for roofers

  • Keep scaffold hire and materials on their own lines: for CIS work the contractor takes the deduction off your labour only.
  • Put the completion date on the invoice as well as the invoice date, since weather often moves it.
  • Roof repairs and re-roofs are standard-rated at 20% if you're VAT registered. Loft insulation fitted in a home is zero-rated until 31 March 2027.

Roofer Invoice Template: questions

Is VAT charged on roof repairs?

If you're VAT registered, roof repairs and re-roofs are standard-rated at 20%. Insulation fitted in a home is zero-rated until 31 March 2027. If you're under the £90,000 VAT threshold and not registered, you charge no VAT at all.

What makes an invoice a VAT invoice?

Once you're VAT registered, your invoices must show your VAT number, the price of each line without VAT, the VAT rate and the VAT amount, and the total. If you're not registered you must not charge VAT or show a VAT number.

How long should payment terms be?

That's up to you: payment on completion, 7, 14 or 30 days are all common. Put the due date on the invoice. With business customers, if you agreed no terms, the Late Payment of Commercial Debts Act lets you claim interest at 8% over the Bank of England base rate once 30 days have passed.
