What to put on a carpenter invoice

  • The word Invoice and a unique invoice number (number them in order)
  • The invoice date and the date the work was finished
  • Your business name and address; a limited company puts its full registered name
  • The customer's name and address
  • What you did, with line prices and the total
  • If you're VAT registered: your VAT number and, for each line, the VAT rate, with the VAT total
  • Payment terms and how to pay: bank details with the invoice number as the reference, and a card payment link if you have one

Tips for carpenters and joiners

  • Carpentry and joinery on a building job comes under CIS: a contractor takes 20% off your labour only (30% if you're not registered), not off the doors and timber you supplied.
  • VAT-registered and working for a VAT-registered contractor? The domestic reverse charge applies: no VAT on the invoice, and the reverse charge wording instead.
  • For bespoke work, invoice the materials deposit first and the balance on fitting.

Carpenter & Joiner Invoice Template: questions

Does CIS apply to carpentry and joinery?

Yes, when you work for a contractor on construction work, such as hanging doors, fitting stairs or first fix on a build. The contractor takes the deduction off your labour only. Making furniture in your own workshop for a homeowner isn't CIS work.

What makes an invoice a VAT invoice?

Once you're VAT registered, your invoices must show your VAT number, the price of each line without VAT, the VAT rate and the VAT amount, and the total. If you're not registered you must not charge VAT or show a VAT number.

How long should payment terms be?

That's up to you: payment on completion, 7, 14 or 30 days are all common. Put the due date on the invoice. With business customers, if you agreed no terms, the Late Payment of Commercial Debts Act lets you claim interest at 8% over the Bank of England base rate once 30 days have passed.
