What to put on an electrician quote
- Your business name, address, phone and email, and your VAT number if you're registered
- The customer's name and the address where the work is
- A quote number, the date and how long the price stands (30 days is common)
- Each part of the job on its own line, with quantity and price, so the customer can see what they're paying for
- VAT shown separately if you're VAT registered
- Any deposit, your payment terms and what isn't included
- A space for the customer to sign and date to accept
Tips for electricians
- Say whether the work is notifiable under Part P and that you'll notify it through your scheme (NICEIC, NAPIT or another), so the customer gets a building regulations compliance certificate.
- Name the certificate they'll get: an Electrical Installation Certificate for a new circuit or consumer unit, a Minor Works Certificate for smaller jobs.
- Give the make and type of the board or charger (for example a 10-way RCBO board with surge protection), so a cheaper quote can be compared like for like.
- Say what's left out: making good the plaster, decorating, and faults found on existing circuits during testing, which you'll price before fixing.

Should an electrician's quote include the certificate?
Yes. Say which certificate the job needs (an Electrical Installation Certificate for a new circuit or consumer unit, a Minor Works Certificate for an added socket or light) and that notifiable work will be registered with building control through your scheme. It shows the price is for safe, signed-off work, which matters when the customer compares you with a cheaper quote.
What's the difference between a quote and an estimate?
A quote is a fixed price for the work it describes: once the customer accepts it, that's the price unless the job changes. An estimate is your best guess and can go up or down. If you can't be sure, for example until a floor is up, quote what you can and say how the unknown part will be priced.
Does a customer have the right to cancel an accepted quote?
If the contract is agreed in the customer's home, or by phone or online, they usually have 14 days to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, and you must give them the cancellation information. If they ask you to start within the 14 days, they pay for the work done if they cancel. Urgent repairs they called you out for are different. Business customers don't get this right.
