What to put on a locksmith quote

  • Your business name, address, phone and email, and your VAT number if you're registered
  • The customer's name and the address where the work is
  • A quote number, the date and how long the price stands (30 days is common)
  • Each part of the job on its own line, with quantity and price, so the customer can see what they're paying for
  • VAT shown separately if you're VAT registered
  • Any deposit, your payment terms and what isn't included
  • A space for the customer to sign and date to accept

Tips for locksmiths

  • Give the full price before you start, including call-out and any out-of-hours rate. A clear price is the fastest way to be trusted.
  • Name the lock standard: BS3621 for mortice deadlocks, and TS007 3-star or SS312 Diamond for euro cylinders. Many home insurers ask for them.
  • Say you'll try non-destructive entry first, and what it costs if the lock has to be drilled and replaced.

Locksmith Quote Template: questions

Should a locksmith give a price before starting?

Yes, always. Give the full price, call-out, entry, parts and labour, before you touch the door, and write it down. It's the main thing customers worry about with locksmiths, and an agreed price means no argument when it's time to pay.

What's the difference between a quote and an estimate?

A quote is a fixed price for the work it describes: once the customer accepts it, that's the price unless the job changes. An estimate is your best guess and can go up or down. If you can't be sure, for example until a floor is up, quote what you can and say how the unknown part will be priced.

Does a customer have the right to cancel an accepted quote?

If the contract is agreed in the customer's home, or by phone or online, they usually have 14 days to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, and you must give them the cancellation information. If they ask you to start within the 14 days, they pay for the work done if they cancel. Urgent repairs they called you out for are different. Business customers don't get this right.
