What to put on a plumber quote

- The customer's name and the address where the work is
- A quote number, the date and how long the price stands (30 days is common)
- Each part of the job on its own line, with quantity and price, so the customer can see what they're paying for
- VAT shown separately if you're VAT registered
- Any deposit, your payment terms and what isn't included
- A space for the customer to sign and date to accept
Tips for plumbers
- Say whether it's a fixed price or a day rate, and how you'll price anything you find once tiles or floors are up.
- Name the fittings by make and model, or write "customer to supply" so it's clear who buys the taps or shower.
- For unvented cylinders, say you hold the G3 qualification and that the work will be notified to building control.
- Say who takes the old suite away and whether tiling, plastering and decorating are included.

How do plumbers quote for jobs with hidden problems?
Quote a fixed price for the work you can see, and say in writing how anything hidden will be priced: an hourly rate, or a price agreed before you carry on. Customers accept an extra far more easily when the quote warned them it might happen.
What's the difference between a quote and an estimate?
A quote is a fixed price for the work it describes: once the customer accepts it, that's the price unless the job changes. An estimate is your best guess and can go up or down. If you can't be sure, for example until a floor is up, quote what you can and say how the unknown part will be priced.
Does a customer have the right to cancel an accepted quote?
If the contract is agreed in the customer's home, or by phone or online, they usually have 14 days to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, and you must give them the cancellation information. If they ask you to start within the 14 days, they pay for the work done if they cancel. Urgent repairs they called you out for are different. Business customers don't get this right.
