Job price calculator for tradespeople
Add up the materials, the hours and your rate, put your markup on, and add VAT if you're registered. You get the quote total with a line-by-line breakdown you can copy onto a quote.
What the materials cost you, before VAT.
Plain maths to help you price work: an estimate, not tax or accounting advice. Nothing you type is sent to us.
How to use the job price calculator
- 1Type the cost of the materials for the job.
- 2Put in the labour: the hours it'll take and your hourly rate.
- 3Add your markup, and choose whether it goes on the materials only or on the whole job.
- 4Pick the VAT rate (0% if you're not VAT registered) and read the quote total.
Worked example
Fitting a new kitchen sink and taps: £420 of materials, 6 hours at £45 an hour, 15% markup on the materials, VAT at 20%.
- 1Markup: £420.00 × 15% = £63.00.
- 2Labour: 6 hours × £45.00 = £270.00.
- 3Before VAT: £420.00 + £63.00 + £270.00 = £753.00.
- 4VAT: £753.00 × 20% = £150.60, so the quote total is £903.60.

Should I put a markup on materials?
Marking up materials pays for the time spent choosing, ordering and collecting them, the money you've tied up in them, and the risk of breakages and returns. The percentage is your call; using the same one every time keeps your prices consistent.
Markup on materials only, or on the whole job?
If your hourly rate already includes your profit, put the markup on the materials only. If your rate only covers your wages, put it on the whole job, so the business makes a profit as well.
Should a quote show VAT separately?
Yes, if you're VAT registered. Show the price before VAT, the VAT and the total, so a business customer can reclaim the VAT and a homeowner knows the full price. If you're not registered, don't charge VAT.
What if I can't price part of the job until I start?
Quote what you can, and say clearly what isn't included and how it'll be priced if it's needed, for example rotten joists found once the floor is up. A clear quote is easier for a customer to compare than one with a padded price.
